The company

PDD Group, founded in 1980, is an international product and service design innovation agency with a London base and consultancy studios in Shanghai and Hong Kong.  It works primarily in three sectors: medical, consumer and industrial. A particular feature of its London office is its in-house Development Centre for prototyping and testing. There is also a library of colours, materials and finishings, and a laboratory.

PDD breaks down its project process into five stages: a period of understanding and discovery; conceiving and evaluating a range of ideas; evolving the ideas into designed and engineered solutions; proving the concept through prototype testing and evaluation; and, finally, preparing specifications and documentation to enable manufacture of the product.

Whatever the design challenge PDD aims to get under the skin of the brief and see it from all stakeholders’ points of view.  Multi-disciplinary teams, made up of people with a wide range of skills from behavioural psychologists to business analysts and of course designers and engineers, are its principal resource.  Inventive thinking is at the heart of its practice.

The interaction

The interaction with PDD Group Ltd led to a mini-exhibition showcasing products which demonstrate the company’s user-centred approach. None of them are new inventions. Thus they evidence the importance of innovation in evolutionary as well as revolutionary products.
