Description

Bakelite vulcanised polyethylene insulated cables. Photo caption: For further information contact: The Press Officer, Bakelite Xylonite Limited, Plastics Materials Group, 12/18 Grosvenor Gardens, London, S.W.1. Tel: 01-730 0898 Ext. 41. Bakelite vulcanised polyethylene insulated cables have been used as part of a distribution network to a housing estate near Plymouth. This is the first of its kind in the UK and could well be the start of a new era in distribution cable and network design. The South Western Electricity Board and Associated Electrical Industries Limited agreed on a co-operative venture to use an all plastics insulated cable network for a Ministry of Public Works Estate of Naval Ratings Barracks. BXL supplied the polyethylene materials and advised on extrusion and vulcanisation where necessary. Picture shows preparation of cable cores prior to making a soldered joint. The high temperature qualities of Bakelite vulcanisable polyethylene allow the conductors to be tinned and soldered with less risk of heat damage to the insulation. This item is part of the MoDiP BXL collection.
