Silver sugar bowl

Description

A dark brown, mottled bakelite sugar bowl with an outer covering of silver, made J Gloster Ltd of Birmingham circa 1934. It is produced by combining spun silver over a moulded inner layer of bakelite, a process that involves shaping a flat silver disc into a hollow item using a lathe to spin the disc whilst shaping it over a former, in this case the shallow bowl. The patent number 325841 stamped on the base refers to the process of covering the bakelite part with a layer of silver. The bowl is accompanied by a pierced silver sugar spoon.
