Silver pepper pot

Description

A silver pepper pot with a black bakelite lining, produced by J. Gloster Ltd of Birmingham, circa 1935, indicated by the hallmark on the base. It is produced by combining spun silver over a moulded inner layer of bakelite, a process that involves shaping a flat silver disc into a hollow item using a lathe to spin the disc whilst shaping it over a former, in this case the two parts of the pepper pot. The patent number 325841 stamped on the base refers to the process of covering the bakelite part with a layer of silver.
