Beer can widget

Description

A widget, removed from a Boddingtons beer can, produced circa 1991. The injection moulded polypropylene widget is in the form of a disc which was held in place by friction in the bottom of the can. A pressurised mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide is forced from the widget when the can is opened creating bubble formation througout the beer. Working best if the beer was served warm, the widget created Boddington's 'draught flow system' and gave a draught beer from a can experience. Instructions on the can stated 'For the true pub taste of Boddingtons cool in the fridge before pouring the entrie contents into a glass in one smooth action'. The beer can widget was invented by John Lunn, MD of Mclenennons, Birmingham and was first launched in the late 1980s by Whitbread so that their draught beer could be made available in a can.
