Description

A pair of black desert boots made of AppleSkin leather. Good Guys Don't Wear Leather was established in 2011 by the founder and designer Marion Hanania and run with the help of long-time collaborator Antonella Santoro. Hanania aims to create a cruelty-free wardrobe made in Europe with no animal products, and with fair trade working conditions for workers. AppleSkin is the name of a bio-based leather alternative. It is an innovative new material that is made with waste recovered from the fruit juice industry. Made in Italy from apples grown in Bolzano, a city in the north of the country. The synthetic leather for shoes is made up of 50% apple fibre and 50% polyurethane to create a more robust material. AppleSkin was created by Frumat, an Italian company founded in 2008 by Hannes Parth. FRUMAT was developed in response to the local issue of apple-waste and the increasing demand for ecological alternatives to leather. The resulting cellulose-based material features a variety of textures, thicknesses, embossing, and laser prints. To make an eco-friendly alternative to leather, waste from apples cultivated in Italy is dried and crushed into a fine powder. The powder is then mixed with pigments and a binder and spread over a canvas until it solidifies into a skin-like material. For their innovative, patented textile technology, FRUMAT was awarded the Green Carpet Fashion Award in Milan in 2018. The synthetic leather is made in Italy and the shoes are made in Portugal.
