Description

The first use of plastics in joint replacement technology, this acrylic hip joint was developed by French brothers Jean and Robert Judet in 1946. By 1952 the Judet prosthetic had been implanted into more than four hundred patients across Europe before technological innovation evolved to supersede it. This example was removed from a patient in 1954. It comprises a spherical head on a tapering stem which is strengthened by a metal insert.
