O'Shea Surfboard

Description

This custom made swallow tail O'Shea surfboard, from the 2000s, has been shaped from a Styrofoam blank which forms the core of the board and then coated with a polyester resin. The blank is sawn, rasped and sandpapered into shape, spray painted and then given a final outer strengthening and waterproof coating. The board has removable fins and a leash to prevent loss of the board whilst surfing. It also has a shaped and padded storage or carrying bag. The structure of extruded polystyrene (Styrofoam) gives it moderate flexibility and a low density, a property which makes it virtually unsinkable. It is now a popular, lightweight and relatively inexpensive material from which to make surfboards.
