Description
A St Michael from Marks & Spencer label, pewter coloured PVC skirt with side vent and zip fastening, dating from the 1990s. The material from which the skirt is made is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on a nylon (PA, polyamide) backing, with a polyester lining. The nylon would be knitted first and then coated with molten PVC and calendered through rollers: the base layer providing stretch and elasticity to the garment whereas the rubbery coating would be more rigid. The expected longevity for this type of construction would be about three years before cracks might start to appear, especially along fold lines such as the seams. The zip has been made into a feature and not hidden and the hem is double stitched. See AIBDC 001191 for the matching top.
