Brookes & Adams

This long established company was founded in 1853. Located in the Birmingham Jewellery and Metalworking Quarter, the company developed considerable expertise in producing metal goods of all sorts. In 1923 a plastics division was formed. The expertise of working in metal was no doubt very helpful in producing moulds for plastics products.

Initially domestic products were produced in Bakelite without any outstanding success. The turning point came when the firm started moulding in Beatl® urea formaldehyde resulting in the highly successful Bandalasta table and picnic ware. This colourful range with its distinctive marbled effect was introduced to the public at Harrods in 1926. The marbling was achieved by manually scattering coloured moulding granules on to the base colour, often cream, before closing the mould.

There is no evidence of there being a design studio in the company. The products were probably engineered rather than designed in the modern sense of the word.
