The designing of the Plastics Subject Specialist Network (Plastics SSN) logo was set as a live brief to Arts University Bournemouth's FdA Visual Communication students.

The students received the the following brief which was supplement by a more detailed verbal brief delivered in person by the manager of the Plastics SSN.

Brief

Background

The Plastics SSN was set up with funding from the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council in 2007. It has some 30 + institutional members drawn from all parts of the UK , including several National Museums.

Its vision is to engage varied audiences with the key role played by plastics in modern society.

Its mission is to share expertise in the history, development, care and interpretation of plastics within and beyond the museum community, in order to reduce duplication of effort and maximise benefits from plastics in museum collections in the UK.

The aims and objectives of the network are to:

  • Reach new audiences for plastics collections.
  • Increase use of plastics collections with an emphasis on teaching and learning.
  • Improve care, management and interpretation of plastics collections.
  • Collaborate on outcome-based projects.
  • Learn from and involve the plastics and design industries in plastics' collections.

The SSN is administered by MoDiP at the Arts University Bournemouth.

The project

To design a logo for the SSN.

Key brand messages will include: looking outward to future, contemporary yet concern for preserving past, knowledge exchange and learning, experience led, research based.

Approval Process

The winning design will be selected by the Plastics SSN Steering Group.
