An early 18th century oval pressed horn box with an equestrian portrait of Peter the Great facing to the right against a textured background. A sword is held over his right arm and a laurel wreath on his head. In the middle ground are five ships and in the foreground, flowers. The box is signed 'SL' - Samuel Lambelet who was a medallist to the court of Brunswick-Luneburg between the years of 1698 and 1727. This box was possibly produced to commemorate the foundation of the Russian navy by Peter in 1714. Exhibited at the Worthing Exhibition in 1973. This natural plastic item forms part of the Worshipful Company of Horners collection.
