The Acme Thunderer

Description

An Acme Thunderer whistle, made from compression moulded phenol formaldehyde, issued to a member of The Reigate Fire Service. This design of classic pea whistle has been made since by the company since the late 1800s, mostly from metal. This example is thought to date from the mid 20th century and has a metal tab stamped 'Reigate Fire Service' on one side and 'JEAL 6' on the reverse, attached to the whistle with a metal split ring. This item forms part of the Plastics Historical Society (PHS) collection.
