The Opake Collar Support

Description

A display card of twelve celluloid collar supports, made circa 1920 - 1939 in Germany. Collar supports or stiffeners enable the shirt collar to lay flat against the collarbone. Some collar supports are sewn in place, others are inserted into a stitched chanel at the back of the collar tip to provide additional structure and removed before laundering. These examples are thought to be the sewn in type indicated by the pierced holdes along their length. Made by cutting from thin translucent cellulose nitrate sheet, each support is 2 1/2 inches long, with rounded ends, pierced with 3 holes at each end and 2 additional holes along the length. Measrements given are for the complete card.
