Description

A rescue throwline is a length of floating rope, stored in a bag, that can be quickly thrown to a casualty in the water. It is most suitable for rescue in fast moving water such as in a flood, at river mouths or around rocky coastlines. The throwline needs to be brightly coloured for easy identification and made from strong, tough and buoyant materials, resistant to sunlight and water damage. This commercially available example is made in Greece by Eval and comes either with a 20m or 25m rope. The line allows Man Overboard recovery with accuracy and swiftness. It has an orange floating polyethylene 6mm in diameter braided rope with high breaking load. The end that the rescuer holds on to runs through a PVC tube to protect the hand. The bag, which is made of nylon with a PVC coating has an external handle made of polypropylene webbing 20mm. This bag is thrown towards the person needing to be rescued and contains a polyethylene foam float for added buoyancy. The instructions of use are printed on the bag.
