Wigan travel tokens

Description

A group of three circular tokens, injection moulded in polystyrene (PS), in blue (1d), white (1 1/2d) and red (3d) colours. The token value is moulded into the top face with a coat of arms on the reverse (depicting two lions either side of a castle and the words ancient and loyal). Used widely on public transport across the country, the plastics tokens were issued by local councils as concessionary fare tokens for certain groups of people under their jurisdiction, eg. schoolchildren. These examples likely date circa 1950s-1960s. The dimensions listed are for the largest token in the group.
