Description
A hinged, vulcanite backcomb surmounted by a border in the shape of a seven-link chain. The compression moulded comb has seven tines (one is broken), and was manufactured by the Dalee Duplex Comb Company, London. Dating to the late 19th century, vulcanised rubber made mourning jewellery, in imitation of the jet worn by Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert, a more affordable alternative. This example is complete with the original box which contains instructions for how to wear the comb.
