Oxo good grips jar opener

Description

An OXO Good Grips jar opener. By placing the device over jars and small bottles, the lid becomes gripped by the stainless steel teeth on either side of the head. A twisting action will then remove the lid, the handle reducing the overall required force. Sam Farber founded OXO in 1990 after observing his wife experiencing difficulties in holding a vegetable peeler, due to arthritis. He approached the agency Smart Design to help him develop a range of utensils that would all feature a wide, oval shaped handle that was easy to control regardless of the size/shape of the hand or strength of grip. A material called Santoprene (a thermoplastic rubber - TPR) was selected because it is robust, durable, soft-to-touch, non-slip (even when wet) and easy to blend with other materials. For tactile engagement, flexible 'fins' were incorporated on either side of the handle for finger grip. The range was tested and adapted alongside volunteers from the American Arthritis Foundation.
