CANTAT-2 Oceanic cable

Description

A section of the second Canadian transatlantic telephone cable (CANTAT), which was in operation from 1974 to 1992, and capable of carrying 1,840 simultanious calls between Nova Scotia and England. The cable was a joint project between the Canadian Overseas Telecommunications Corporation (COCT)) and the British General Post Office (GPO). This section is brass bound and cut away as a presentation piece. It shows the layers of steel, copper, dielectic insulation, armouring, and protective and insulation polyethylene jacket that make up the cable.
