Description

Pieces of a trinket box made from cellulose nitrate, in the style of a Chinese 19th century carved ivory box. The hand carved scenes on each of the four sides of the box depict daily life and include figures, architecture and trees. The lid, carved in many layers, is a depiction of warriors, with a surrouding border of intricately carved flowers and foliage. There is a central cartouche with a monogram which appears to be the letters HPE. The front of the box would have been secured with a metal lock, which is still in place. The box would have stood on four carved feet which are in the style of the face of a mythical creature. Some parts of a dark red velvet lining are still attached to a few pieces whilst other lining pieces are detached. It appears that all parts of the box are present apart from the base. Measurements given are for the lid only.
