Description
A pair of bamboo roll top socks made by BAM, a bamboo clothing company. In green with orange and purple stripes, they are made of 76% bamboo viscose, 23% polyamide (nylon), and 1% elastane. Made in Turkey, the socks have a reinforced toe and heel with extra padding, and the rib knit welt has been replaced by a roll top for a more relaxed fit. In size 4-7, this example is unworn and still with its original packaging. The company states that all of their products are produced from viscose made from bamboo. In processing, mature culms or stems are harvested from the bamboo plant, leaving the roots in the ground so that the plant can continue to grow. After being cut down into chips, the bamboo is then washed, broken down into a pulp and dried. This then goes to the fibre producer who transforms the pulp into a fibre using a chemical process. The fibres are then spun into a yarn which can be knitted or woven into a soft material. The bamboo viscose is anti-static and absorbent, helping to keep the feet dry, comfortable and fresh as moisture does not sit on the surface of the fabric thus preventing odour-causing bacteria. It is dense enough to keep the feet warm yet breathable and is promoted as being a sustainable product. The BAM website claims the positive impact of these socks as having saved 59.5 litres of drinking water, avoided 0.1kg CO2 of emissions and prevented 73mg of pesticides by tracing through their supply chain and measuring their impact at every stage compared against the conventional cotton equivalent.
