Description
A PET, solar buddies sunscreen applicator, refillable and designed for children. Consisting of a bright orange coloured, ergonomically shaped, easy grip handle that contains the sunscreen, this part screws into the applicator head that delivers a controlled dose of cream onto the skin via a roller ball which is then massaged into the skin by the sponge. This example has a green coloured, snap-fit lid. Co-designed by Kelli Aspland and Laura Waters in response to difficulties experienced by their own primary-aged children when applying suncream at school, where staff were unable to assist through 'no touch' policies. They decided to examine how and why young children struggled, finding they had little concept of how to control the flow, would apply far too much cream and then make a mess when trying to rub it into their skin. The design solution began in 2011 and, with the assistance of product design students from Cardiff Metropolitan University, the solar buddies applicator was finally patented in 2018. Small and compact with a 100ml capacity, the solar buddies applicator removes the inconvenience of children having to carry a large bottle of suncream around and allows the parent to monitor useage at the end of each school day. There is space for the child's name to be written on the side of the applicator and it is accompanied by a sheet of stickers to further personalise and a leaflet of fun activities to learn about being safe in the sun.
