Description
The first non-metal wheelchair designed for institutional use where metal components would be undesirable, such as in MRI scanning rooms, airport security or swimming pools. The EasyRoller 1 began development in 2000 and was first introduced for sale in 2001. The EasyRoller 2 was developed in 2009. It was designed and developed by Eker Design in Norway and is produced in Germany by Aricon GmbH. In July 2011 Eker Design was awarded the Red Dot design award for the Easy Roller, recognising its outstanding design and engineering, with the jury highlighting 'functional elements such as the steering handle, armrest and tipstop (which) are intelligently integrated into the design, lending the wheelchair an overall welcoming appearance'. In the same year it also achieved an Honours Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council. The EasyRoller is designed to be user friendly. It has a wide, comfortable seat, is stable yet easy to manoeuvre, the parking brakes are easily accessible for both user or assistant and the front and rear wheel tubeless tyres are puncture-proof. The footrest can be rotated backwards if it is not required. Transparent polycarbonate cloth protectors on each side between the seat and the armrests prevent contact between the users clothing and the tyres. The overall look of the chair has been designed with the intention of appealing to the user and lessening the feeling of being institutionalised. It has a soft, rounded shape and has protective padding on all human contact areas. The wheelchair has easy clean surfaces and all paddings are water resistant and easy to dry, however, for pool use, the chair is available without seat and back padding to avoid buoyancy. Cavities in the chair quickly fill with water which drains away easily once out of the water. Materials used are all recyclable. It is constructed from rotomolded polyethylene on the body and footrest, polyurethane tyres with reinforcing strings of Kevlar, polyamide rims and brake system, polyoxymethylene bearings and ethylene-vinyl acetate padding.
