Description

The Lumo Lead is a weight designed to reduce seabird bycatch in pelagic longline fishing, designed and manufactured by Fishtek Marine, a group of marine scientists and engineers, based in Devon, UK. Line weighting is considered one of the simplest and most effective methods for preventing seabird bycatch in longline fishing: weighting the baited hook so it will sink quickly, minimising the amount of time it is on or near the surface of the water, within reach of diving seabirds. However, traditional leaded weights can cause injury to the crew if they flyback during line hauling. The Lumo Lead slides onto the line, as opposed to being crimped onto it, so that if the line breaks the weight will slide off, reducing the energy of the recoiling line and reducing flyback. This example encases the lead within a luminescent nylon sheath that will glow for up to six hours, attracting fish to the vicinity of the hook.
