Brown artificial eye

Description

A hand painted, acrylic, artificial or prosthetic eye donated to the museum by Cantor and Nissel Ltd. To make this prosthesis, a plaster cast mould is first made from a sample sent in by the patient (this could be the moulding of an eye socket, a fitting shape or an existing artificial eye that fits well). An acylic base layer is cast from the mould coloured to match the patient's sclera. The eye is then hand painted, matched to photographs or colour samples provided, to include the iris, the pupil, colour and detailing on the sclera and veins. A clear, acrylic layer then seals the entire surface which is hand polished.
