Philite plaque of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard

Description

A rectangular wall plaque commemorating the marriage of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands to Prince Bernhard, on 7th January 1937. The plaque has a central roundal containing a relief portrait of the couple. Surrounding this is the inscription 'JULIANA. PRINSES DER NEDERLANDEN : BERNHARD. PRINS VAN LIPPE. BIESTERFELD'. Beneath this is a floral garland with a ribbon tied centrally and the date 7 January 1937. This plaque is made from Philite, a compression moulded urea formaldehyde made by Philips at their Eindhoven factory in the Netherlands c. 1934. The plaque is pierced along the top edge to accommodate a cord by which the plaque can be hung. Attached to the cord is a round printed paper tag. The front face of the tag reads '29 December 1936 Huldebetoon Vereenigingen'. The reverse side reads 'Comite voor de luisterrijke viering te 's-Gravenhague van het huwelijk van H.K.H. Prinses Juliana met Z.D.H. Prins Bernhard'
