Dlearon box

Description

A laboratory samples desk-top box fabricated from Delaron by HN & B Plastics, circa 1942. Documents acquired together with the box indicate that about 200 of these boxes were made, the order coming from an instrument maker in Marylebone for a Cambridge university research laboratory and were to contain samples, possisbly of a corrosive nature, so no metallic fastenings were used for the corners although the bottom was pinned on using brass pins in accurately drilled holes. A sliding interlocking corner was designed which required precise machining and the use of a catalyst hardening cement. They were made by organ building craftsmen of Wm Hill and Son and Norman E Beard Ltd with over two centuries of craft tradition. A handwritten description and drawings of the corners accompanies this object.
