Description
A set of Kake Brand chocolate moulds, circa 1970s. This set includes moulds for Easter eggs, birthday and Christmas cake decorations with instructions, foil wrappers and a Kake Brand milk chocolate cake covering packet. The moulds are made by vacuum forming. A pre-formed plastic sheet (itself made by a process known as calendaring, in which plastic granules are fed between a series of heated rollers to form a thin sheet) is attached to a mould and heated until softened. A vacuum is then introduced between the mould and the sheet so that the sheet is drawn into the shape of the mould. Once cooled, the plastic sheet retains the shape of the mould, and the process can be repeated thousands of times. The mould can be made of any material including wood and plaster and so the tooling costs are low.
