Different species of animal create different types of horn;

Buffalo horn (1) is hard and black, so was used for engineering applications such as the hocks of archery bows to prevent the wood splitting. Oxen produce a soft horn (2) that can be made translucent, and was used for lantern and church windows. Sheep's horns (3) can be heated and shaped before carving to make the handles for walking sticks. Tortoiseshell (4) is actually the shell of the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. Just like horn it is made of keratin and can be heated in the same way.
