Wollaston Industrial and Provident Society milk token

Description

A cream coloured circular token, injection moulded in cellulose acetate. '1 Pint Milk' is moulded into the top face and 'Wollaston Ind. & Prov. Society' in the reverse. Industrial and Provident Societies were set up for the benefit of their local communities and were first formed in 1852. They operated in a similar way to the Co-operative Societies and issued pre-payment tokens to be exchanged for goods at a later date, often collected when the commodity was delivered. Plastics tokens were in use post WWI, this example likely dates circa 1950s-1960s.
