Small clock with Xylonite case

Description

A small mantel or bedside clock set in a simple casing made from a tortoiseshell effect Xylonite. Xylonite was a trade name for cellulose nitrate and was produced by Daniel Spill, an assistant of Alexander Parkes who first developed cellulose nitrate under the commercial name of Parkesine, H.Leigh Bennett and A.D.Mackay, who together formed the British Xylonite Company in 1877.
